Hello, I'm Helen Wright, mum to Johan and
Founder of BirthWright.
Let me guess... you've heard about 'Hypnobirthing', but you're not really very sure what it's all about? Well, you've come to the right place. I was in exactly the same boat...
I first heard about Hypnobirthing several years ago, from a friend who had used the techniques to give birth completely naturally; with no interventions, no drugs and not in a hospital! She'd chosen to give birth in somewhere called a 'Birth Centre.' The room was enormous; it had a birth pool, beanbag, double bed, sofa, en suite bathroom... and she hadn't paid a penny - this was all on the NHS.
I went to visit my friend in the birth centre, shortly after her beautiful daughter was born and I will never forget how calm and serene they both were. I made a mental note of the word: Hypnobirthing and
since then, I’d always planned to give it a go.
Anyway! How are you feeling? Glowing? Radiant? Bursting for the loo?! Excited mostly, I hope! Or have you seen and heard one too many white knuckle birth stories? Are you glued to One Born Every Minute?
Are you starting to feel ‘the fear’? Do people keep reminding you how massive you are? Erm… I’m growing a human here FFS! I heard this all-the-bloody-time; my best friend even made a Pic Collage of me and Mr Greedy! In all fairness, by week 39 the likeness was uncanny:
“Are you sure there’s just one in there?”
“That’s one BIG baby!”
“Ha! You’re planning a ‘natural’ birth?! *sniggers* Good luck with that! Honestly, just take the epidural.”
Seriously, what is wrong with some people?! I was terrified. I started questioning whether I really was growing a giant. Maybe I should stop drinking those spinach Nutribullet concoctions Dave made me every morning. Or was my growth directly proportional to my new found love of cake and all things sweet and bad for me…?
I began to doubt whether I would be able to try for the natural birth I had been hoping for. Oh god, what if it hurts? What if I can’t handle the pain? What if I poo?! What if I tear down there? What if they have to use forceps and drag this supersize baby out of me? What if I have to have a C-Section? Will Dave and I be OK? Will he still love me? Will this baby come with instructions?!
Do yourself a huge favour right now and take a long, slow, deep breath in….. a long, slow, deep breath out… and relax. Stop watching OBEM immediately - and ask your well-meaning friends and family to tell you something positive about their birthing journeys instead.
Birth doesn't have to be like this;
birth can be relaxed and calm;
birth can be free of pain;
birth can empower you.
Birth can be all these things - and more.
It's time to re-frame your thinking and get to work! You see, that's the key to Hypnobirthing: if you create the right mindset and put in the work - you WILL get the results.
Did it all go 'to plan' for me? Did I have the natural birth I'd hoped for? Did I birth Goliath?! You can read my birth story here - enjoy!
If you're ready to make a HUGE difference to your experience of pregnancy and birth, please - get in touch.
It would be an absolute honour to support you on this amazing journey and help you to have the right birth for you and your baby.
